Psychology and Computers

Psychology and computers are interwoven in many ways. Technology has a huge impact on the way that psychological research and treatment is conducted. In reality, psychologists are now able to reach a larger audience and deliver services in more convenient ways. This is especially applicable during times of pandemics like the recent Covid-19 outbreak because digital technology offers a way for patients to receive treatment remotely.

Computers have a long and rich history in the study human psychology. They were first introduced with the creation and use of magnetic resonance imaging scanners (MRIs) and electroencephalogram devices that allowed researchers to take pictures of the brain during psychological tests. Computers can also store and analyze huge amounts data to enable more accurate and reproducible research.

Additionally, computer-aided design allows researchers to build sophisticated models of the mind. These models can then be tested to see how they react in various situations. This is a step up from traditional methods for gathering psychological data, for example self report questionnaires or interviews. These only capture only one aspect of the subject at any given moment and require subjects be encouraged to participate.

In the modern age computer science and psychology have become inextricably intertwined. Students of psychology are therefore best placed to contribute to the development of technology that will define the future. This is especially so since our relationship with technology is constantly evolving. New tools for measuring and assessing are being developed constantly. Interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming increasingly important in the development of these software as well as understanding useful link its impact on the people. This is reflected in our degree program, which includes core psychology as well as computing modules in addition to a strand of design-related modules that are shared.
